College students prepare to show off their artistic visions at The Lightbox

YOUNG Woking artists will show off their talent at an exhibition in the town next month – with a chance that their work might be bought for posterity.

Students from Woking College will make a return to The Lightbox to present their ninth annual Summer Exhibition.

Running from 7 to 13 July, the collective is an opportunity for visitors to view the works created by 16 to 19-year-old pupils from the Rydens Way establishment, which continues to nurture highly talented young people making a start in the field,
having first opened its doors in 1977.

The showcase will feature work from students of Fine Art, Textiles, Photography, Applied Art and Design & Technology courses.

It will be exhibited in a multi-disciplinary display, taking inspiration from a range of themes such as transformation, series and contrasts.

Renowned art aficionado, Chris Ingram, the man behind the massive collection of art at the Lightbox gallery – The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art – will also be on the lookout for talented new artists, and has bought works by Woking students in the past. Previous purchases have included Chrissy by Claudia Rietti, which was displayed in this year’s Upper Gallery exhibition Not All Contemporary Art is Rubbish!

In total the Ingram collection consists of more than 650 works, and is in constant demand for loans to other museums and galleries for exhibitions across the country.

Chris says: “I always make a point of seeing the Woking College Show as the standard is usually very high. Four pieces from their students are now in my collection.”

Learning manager at The Lightbox Abi Hall says the exhibition is always a much-anticipated event: “We always look forward to showing the Woking College Exhibition at The Lightbox,” adding that the hours of hard work really shine through: “All the
students and tutors work extremely hard to put the work up and every year the quality of the work seems to get better and better.

“Having had a sneak preview, I know that this year will be no different.”

The Woking College exhibition will be on show at The Lightbox Museum and Gallery in Woking from Thursday 7 July until Wednesday 13 July. Entry is free.
