Woking produced a superb performance to win 5-1 at home to Altrincham in the National League.

Goals from Matt Ward, John Marquis (2), Timmy Akinola and Roy Syla fired the Cards to an emphatic victory in front of a crowd of 2,226 at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

The visitors had the first opportunity of the afternoon in the second minute, when Aidan Barlow drove into the box and hit a low shot which was parried away by Cards keeper Will Jaaskelainen. The rebound went back to Barlow, whose follow-up shot was well saved by Jaaskelainen.

The Cards took the lead on 21 minutes when Syla whipped in an inviting cross from the left and Ward arrived at the back post and slotted his close-range finish past Robins keeper Owen Evans.

Woking doubled their advantage five minutes later after a clinical, free-flowing move. Akinola won the ball in midfield and slipped a pass to Ward, who delivered a superb low ball into the box from the right to Marquis, who clinically fired home past Evans to score his first Cards goal.

The Cards nearly scored a third in the 33rd minute when Ward hung an inviting ball up to Akinola, whose header wrong-footed Evans but went just over the bar.

Woking continued to press and were awarded a penalty three minutes later when Jaiden Putman's cross hit Sam Taylor’s hand and referee Dan Blades had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

Marquis stepped up from the spot and rolled his 37th-minute spot kick into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, with Evans going the wrong way.

Marquis let fly from distance two minutes later with a low, right-footed shot which went wide of the left-hand post.

Woking had another attempt at goal on 41 minutes when Putman took a touch before hitting a right-footed shot which was comfortably saved by Evans.

The Robins pulled a goal back in the 44th minute when Matthew Kosylo whipped in an inviting cross from the right and Barlow arrived at the far post and tucked his left-footed finish past Jaaskelainen into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

Altrincham nearly scored a second on 49 minutes when Tom Crawford dragged his finish across goal wide of the far post.

The Cards were soon back on the front foot and nearly scored a fourth in the 53rd minute when Ward hung up an inviting ball into the box to Marquis, whose close-range finish was saved by Evans.

Woking went close again two minutes later when Timi Odusina drove forward and passed to Aiden O'Brien, whose low shot from just outside the box was well held by Evans.

The Cards regained their three-goal advantage on the hour mark when Ward’s attempt was blocked and the ball fell to Akinola just outside the box, who emphatically fired his right-footed finish past a wrong-footed Evans.

Woking interim manager Craig Ross made his first substitution of the afternoon in the 66th minute, with Liam Dulson replacing Marquis.

Dulson nearly got himself on the scoresheet four minutes later when he received a pass from Akinola and hit a powerful right-footed shot goalwards which was parried behind for a corner by Evans.

The Cards did get their fifth of the afternoon from the resulting set piece when Syla headed home past Evans.

Ross made a triple change on 72 minutes, with Anthony Georgiou, Josh Kelly and Jake Forster-Caskey replacing Shadrach Ogie, O’Brien and Akinola.

Woking nearly scored a sixth a minute later when Putman hung in an inviting cross from the right and Dulson looped a header goalwards which was well saved by Evans.

Ross made his fifth and final substitution of the afternoon in the 79th minute, with Harrison Sohna replacing Ward.

Altrincham nearly pulled a goal back a minute later when Jimmy Knowles fired his effort just wide of the left-hand post.

The Cards were soon back on the front foot and went close in the 84th minute when Georgiou cut in from the left and hit a low right-footed shot which was well held by substitute keeper Andrew Firth.

Georgiou went close again on 90 minutes when his thunderous volley fizzed just over the bar.

The sixth goal failed to arrive, but Woking picked up a thoroughly-deserved three points after a very impressive performance.
