The September ceremony of the Brookwood Last Post followed the same pattern it has for many years, commemorating the involvement and losses of Jewish people.

The Defence Attaché from the Israeli Embassy was in attendance, his third such visit to the ceremony, alongside representatives of AJEX, the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen & Women.

Paul McCue delivered a brief history of Operation Boatswain, a terrible incident when 23 Palmach Jewish volunteers and their British Liaison Officer of the Special Operations Executive were lost at sea on 18 May 1941.

Wreaths were laid by the Defence Attaché on behalf of the Israeli Defence Force and Louisa Russell on behalf of the Secret World War Two Learning Network.

Ruth Moore sounded the Last Post and Rob Bennett was on spiritual duties. Kaddish was recited by Mike Bluestone.

There were ten standards on parade with the BLP standard and the Union Flag being carried by Alan Lopez and Denis Stewart respectively.

The Brookwood Last Post Association began in January 1941 in response to the Germans refusing to allow the nightly Act of Remembrance and Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

Formed as the Surrey Last Post Association, it was later renamed the Brookwood Last Post Association.

The association meets on the first Sunday of the month at 3pm at the RAF Memorial (shelter), Brookwood Military Cemetery for a relatively short ceremony.

The August ceremony welcomed the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Rob Leach, and remembered Soldaat 2 KL Mathieu Alois Callot of the Belgian Army 2 Karabiniers 2/1 (5 Cie).

Soldaat Callot was injured and taken to a hospital initially in Folkestone. He was later moved to Saint Olave’s Infirmary in Southwark, where died on 11 July, 1916 his 26th birthday.

He is the only Belgian casualty from the First World War buried in the Belgian Plot in Brookwood Military Cemetery.
