Woking going the extra mile for charity

THE Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is back – and it’s coming to Woking.

The town is set to host its fifth fundraising mile on Sunday 20 March, and needs locals to come together and make themselves proud by entering at www.sportrelief.com.

The colourful, cheerful and eager ‘Milers’ will be doing their bit to make a difference to people living across the UK and in the world’s poorest communities.

Setting off from Woking Hockey Club, the mile will take in the sights of Goldsworth Park Lake and is set to be as popular as ever.

Councillor Beryl Hunwicks, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health & Wellbeing, said that the event is an opportunity for Woking to show its solidarity and commitment to change.

She added: “From little ones with their mums and dads to runners up against the clock, there’s something for everyone to make themselves feel proud on this special day.”

Sport Relief, of which Dame Kelly Holmes is an ambassador, runs from 18 to 20 March, and there are more ways than ever to take part.

A spokesman for the charity said: “Whether you get sponsored to enter an event at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games or fundraise with friends and family at home, work or school, you’ll help people living incredibly tough lives.

“In fact, half of all the money raised by the public is spent right here at home in the UK, with the other half used to make a
difference in the world’s poorest communities.

“This year, you can either run the Goldsworth Park Mile on 20 March or take in the Swimathon at Woking’s Pool in the Park, which runs for the duration of Sport Relief.

“Entrants can choose to complete one, three or six-mile runs in Goldsworth Park; or take on the Swimathon challenge individually or in a team of between two and five people over 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km.”
