Age of homeless drops

THE average age of homeless people on the streets of Woking has dropped significantly over the past five years. Most are now aged 18 to 24.

One of these is 23-year-old Sam, who is using the York Road Project services while the borough council helps him to find permanent accommodation. “The girls here do a great job,” he said. “They’ll go that extra mile for you and when you’ve got good people around you it gives you that get up and go.”

Sam has suffered child abuse, domestic violence and mental health issues and has spent three months sleeping rough.
