When you look around and get into what makes our community tick you find many heroes doing their bit to support the local area and bring people together.

A brilliant example of this is Teas on the Rec in Bisley. This began in 2011 as a way to ease isolation and connect local residents, giving them a space to socialise and chat on a summer Thursday afternoon.

Teas on the Rec has grown into a massive summer fundraiser for local charities that are important to the community. Over the years they have raised so much money for charity and continue in the vein of community connection.

There is an army of volunteers who set everything up (and pack it all away again) and then there are the cakes, which I can personally say are very tasty indeed.

An army of bakers have been leaving us visitors with a quandary – which one do we go for?

Teas on the Rec runs from the spring half-term right through the end of August with the final event this year supporting Woking & Sam Beare Hospice.

Outside of the summer months there are smaller indoor events but it is Teas on the Rec that has become such a fixture over the summer, giving us that place to chat and catch up with old friends as well as making new ones. It all starts with a slice of cake and a cup of tea!

On Radio Woking I spoke to some of those who have put so much into Teas on the Rec over the years. It is a team effort to get the event off the ground and ensure there is a plentiful supply of cake and tea flowing for everybody.

This year there was the added challenge of the heatwave, and the weather was monitored closely for warnings each week with the team on hand with water to keep us hydrated.

A huge congratulations to the team who are now taking a break – an incredible achievement creating the very definition of community spirit in Bisley.

Elsewhere this week we had a new arrival in our household – not the human variety but a robot vacuum! I have been thinking of getting one for a while now and so far our robot friend has done a good job mapping the house then hoovering and even mopping the floor.

Then when it has completed its clean it returns to its base and automatically empties the dirt into a bag – Magic our cat isn't sure what to make of it but I do love a gadget! Now all I need it to do is make me a cuppa ! I'm sure there is technology somewhere which will do that!
