Latest plans for ambitious Victoria Square

THE final stage of recommendations for the ambitious, £460 million Victoria Square development go to Woking Borough Council’s Executive victoria-square-cgi-nov-2014

Subject to funding approval, the extensive project will go ahead with contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, having previously succeeded in an open tender process, while the 196-room hotel as part of the plans will be operated by leading global brand Hilton.

Planning consent, with continuing minor amendments, has been granted to include, in part:

  •  remodelling the western end of Wolsey Place, ToysRUs and the old bandstand mall,
  •  provision of some 14,500sq metres of new retail space
  • a Marks & Spencer store to ‘anchor Peacocks and Wolsey Place shopping centres’
  • a 196-bedroom hotel and conference centre
  • 390 high-quality furnished apartments to rent
  • new public square adjacent to Victoria Way
  • 242 additional parking spaces in the red car park in addition to some 400 spaces proposed at Heathside Crescent

Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration, Councillor Saj Hussain, told the News & Mail: “Officers have worked on the project for a long time now and I support the proposals. I think it is good for the town and it will pave the way for even more private investors in Woking.”

Pending approval, Bandstand Developments Ltd will be renamed Victoria Square Woking Limited in partnership with Moyallen (who currently operate Peacocks).
