There wasn’t a dry eye in the room at Weystone Manor care home in Woking last week when staff arranged a heartwarming surprise for resident Nigel, who is currently convalescing at the home.

Knowing how deeply he missed his constant companion, care home staff teamed up with Nigel’s neighbour to orchestrate a surprise visit from Rebecca, Nigel's beloved parrot of 40 years.

The moment Rebecca was brought into the room, Nigel’s face lit up with sheer joy.

What moved onlookers most was Rebecca’s immediate, touching response to her lifelong owner. Despite the unfamiliar surroundings of the care home, the intelligent bird instantly recognised Nigel’s voice and touch, leaning into him and demonstrating the unbreakable bond the pair have shared for four decades.

"Nigel speaks about Rebecca constantly, and we knew how much he missed her while recovering," said Abdul Rifai, general manager at Weystone Manor.

"Seeing the pure happiness on his face, and how beautifully Rebecca responded to him after a period apart, was an incredibly moving experience for all of us.

“At Weystone Manor, we believe that emotional well-being is just as important as physical recovery, and this visit was the perfect tonic."

The surprise was made possible thanks to Nigel’s dedicated neighbour, who has been looking after Rebecca and safely transported her to the home for the afternoon.

The visit provided an immense boost to Nigel’s spirits as he continues his convalescence, proving that true companionship knows no bounds.
