Big sleep out for York Road Project

Sleep Out raises funds for charity.

Big-hearted fundraisers slept out on the streets of Woking on Friday night to raise money for homeless charity York Road Project.  Up to 60 volunteers raised awareness of the charity’s work during the afternoon by mixing with shoppers, and brave volunteers held an all-night Sleep Out under the canopy in Albion Square.

Charity operations manager Fay Kearley said that it is important to tackle homelessness as the number of rough sleepers in Woking had risen by around 33% in the last year. She stated: “We are seeking to meet all members of the community to assure them that there is an organisation looking after their interests; to prevent homelessness, to assist the homeless, and counter anti-social behaviour.”

Charity worker Sam said “I want to help people, and will do whatever it takes to raise money for this good cause.”

Starting at 9 PM and finishing at 0730 AM, the Sleep Out raised an estimated £3,000 to combat homelessness in Woking.York Rd Volunteers. Fay is blonde, blue top, glasses-1

There are complex reasons behind the causes of homelessness, and the York Road Project provides support and accommodation to individuals who have a local connection to Woking by having lived or worked in the borough for at least one year.
