Photographer has specs appeal

A 66-YEAR-OLD photography enthusiast from Woking has emerged from behind the camera to become a regional semi-finalist for Specsavers annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year award.

specs-woking-semi-finalist-edAdrian Johnson was recently selected in the South East region’s 60-plus age category and is the winner of Specsavers vouchers worth £150 and a bottle of champagne. He has said that he would like to go much further and become the overall Spectacle Wearer of 2016 where he would win £10,000 and a luxury holiday to New York for two.

Thousands of proud glasses wearers from every corner of the UK and Ireland have been entering this year’s event by sending in specs-selfies to their local Specsavers store. The competition, which has been running for the last 21 years, aims to celebrate wearing glasses with pride and every entry raises £1 for UK anti-bullying children’s charity Kidscape.

The five age categories – 16 to 24; 25 to 34; 35 to 44; 45 to 59 and 60-plus – and a Facebook favourite voted for by the public, has given the judges a fantastic insight into the country’s specs style. Adrian, who has worn glasses for 54 years, was invited to Specsavers in Woking to be given his vouchers.

Store Director Carey Galloway said: “Adrian has been a loyal customer for more than seven years and he always has a good story to tell. It would be lovely to see him crowned Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016. He’s such a wonderful guy and he proves that glasses should be embraced, not something to be ashamed of.

If Adrian triumphs, he could meet former Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt at a celeb-packed ceremony at London’s Northumberland Avenue on 11 October.
