Woking manager Craig Ross was delighted after his side's emphatic 5-2 victory at Carlisle United in the National League.

Goals from Shadrach Ogie, Matt Ward and John Marquis (3) fired the Cards to a convincing win in front of a crowd of 6,569 at Brunton Park.

“It was brilliant,” said Ross. “The lads were unbelievable.

“To come to Carlisle and dominate the game in the way we did, especially in the second half, was brilliant.

“No matter what form Carlisle might be in, it’s a difficult place to come.

“They’ve got great quality, so to come and put them to the sword like we have is great.

“The message before the game was we want to make Carlisle defend as much as possible.

“We knew they were going to be open on transition. They want to try to be expansive, so when we won the ball back we had to break quickly with pace and numbers and deliver the ball into the box.

“We felt that Carlisle were weak defensively from crosses. The first goal came from that, and other chances came from that.

“We had to make a change in shape halfway through the first half. Carlisle set up a little bit differently to how we expected, so we needed to counteract that.

“The lads took it on brilliantly and carried out the gameplan, and what we asked of them at half-time, to an absolute tee. I’m very pleased.

“Our mindset is we approach every game with an intent to go and attack and hurt teams, and be aggressive.

“In the second half, we had loads of chances. We were aggressive on the press, we stepped in to win the ball back and we looked like the Red Arrows at times going forward. We won it back and flew forward with numbers and pace. That’s what we want our team to be about.

“Everyone, to an absolute man, carried out what we’d asked from them. This result and performance should give us massive belief moving forward.”

Marquis took home the match ball after scoring a second-half hat-trick for the Cards, and Ross was delighted with his efforts.

“John leads the line superbly well,” said Ross.

“He had two centre-halves wrestling him at times, yet he still managed to find a way to get it to stick or keep it in the vicinity so it didn’t come straight back at us, which gave us a great platform.

“We knew John was going to come in and score goals – he’s done it throughout his career.

“He looks a threat. We need to keep feeding him and give him the service he’s going to thrive on. If we continue to do that, he’ll score plenty more.”

Jaiden Putman set up Woking’s first goal for Ogie, and Ross was delighted with his performance.

“Jaiden’s been great,” said Ross. “He has got great quality in the final third – it was a great ball from him for the first goal.

“What I like about Jaiden is he’s tenacious, he’s tight to his man all the time and he’s on the front foot.

“That’s how we want our team to play, not just him.”
