School boy Adam Kennard’s shock call-up to run the line at Woking Football Club

DREAM CALL-UP - Adam Kennard

A 16-YEAR-OLD Woking fan had a Saturday to remember after being drafted in as an emergency linesman for the Cards’ clash with Maidenhead United.

Lifelong Cards fan Adam Kennard was on his way to Kingfield to watch his beloved league leaders grapple with the Magpies when he received a call asking him to attend the clubhouse.

On arrival, he was asked whether he was still a registered official and if he would consider standing in after an incident had prevented the scheduled linesman from attending.

Adam, who usually referees in the Surrey and Hants league on weekends and has aspirations of becoming a top-flight official, said: “I had no idea what it was about.

“I thought it was a wind-up to start with but then I had a chat with the ref and realised that it was for real!

“I had to call my dad and ask him to rush my kit to the ground. It arrived just 20 minutes from kick-off.

“I was really nervous but I got a great reception from the crowd which helped. Once the match started I just gave it my full concentration and focused on the game.

I had to work really hard to ensure that I kept up with play.

“People asked me after if it was difficult to officiate a game involving my team.

“At all levels, referees and assistants need to be impartial and I was comfortable giving decisions against both sides.”

But commenting after the 2-0 defeat that keeps the Blue Square South title race well and truly alive, he added: “I was still disappointed with the final result!

“Today was a fantastic experience for me. The referee was very complimentary about my performance and I look forward to when I’m involved every week at a high level of football.”
