The gift of giving rings true at annual Santa Fun Run

YOU can bet your Christmas stocking that Elf and Safety were out in force for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ annual Santa Fun Run on Sunday.

Thankfully, the immensely popular fundraiser did not run into any red tape; the only crimson on display coming in the form of bright robes and hats donned by entrants braving the weekend’s winter chill.

Each year the run – which features 2.5km or 5km routes around Brooklands – pulls in tens of thousands of pounds to help finance the work of staff and volunteers at the charities. Beginning and concluding at the grounds of Mercedes-Benz World, the day roared into life when the hundreds of hospice well wishers arrived for their Santa suit fittings.

Saint Nicks of all sizes and shapes wrapped themselves up in flashes of red and white, with many opting to accessorize their new kit with festive hairbands, glasses and scarves.

Not everyone involved was a Father Christmas impersonator, however, with some deciding to take on the role of elf
– presumably in the hope that the real Santa would mistake them for one of his little helpers and whisk them off to the North Pole.

Out of place but certainly welcome was a Pink Panther; part of a team representing British Military Fitness. Though slightly off-hue, the feline friend certainly showed Yuletide cheer that the big man himself would be proud of.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s run, Fundraising Manager Danielle Le Cuirot said: “This is an event for all the family and it’s wonderful to see people of all ages and from all over the area coming together to support us each year.”

Each runner – including Matthew Jones (right) – was presented with a medal of recognition as they crossed the finish line.

Last December the event – which was first held in 2010 – generated in excess of £20,000 to help maintain priceless services in Woking and further afield.

This lot will no doubt unwrap something extra special from Santa this year as reward for their out of this world efforts.
