Brave ‘soles’ step up for challenge

A GROUP of 21 daring individuals walked barefoot over a scorching walkway of burning coals to raise money for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices.

The Firewalk, which took place at West Byfleet Golf Club on Thursday last week, was the first organised by the hospices and is one of the many fundraisers held every year to help finance support for people with life limiting illnesses.

Adrenaline seekers facing the fire included Helen Hampshire and her brother Richard Grace from Woking, who took part in memory of Helen’s husband, who was cared for by the hospices after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Also taking part were a team of 12 from Menzies LLP, Managing Director at Limelight Marketing  Karen Sutton, and CEO of the hospices Nigel Harding, who braved the flames twice, being both the first and last to take part.

Errol Gordon, firewalk trainer and owner of Planit Firewalking, was on hand to provide the confidence boosting pre-walk training techniques to increase participants’ self-belief and to ensure the ‘stroll’ was completed safely.

Senior Manager Payroll Bureau at Menzies, Denise Love, said that the Firewalk helped some of her team tick a challenge off their bucket list.

She added: “There were 12 of us from Menzies who took part and the majority of us work within the Payroll Bureau.

“The whole evening was so enjoyable and nowhere near as frightening as we expected, especially after the motivational session we had with Errol, who inspired us to think positively and remove negativity from our minds.”

Community Fundraiser Wendy Denty, who helped to organise the Firewalk, explained that the event has already pulled in £3,500.

She said: “It was great to see so many people sign up – it was a brilliant evening and everyone who took part felt a great sense
of achievement and left feeling really positive.

“Thanks goes to all who came, as well as to everyone who sponsored our firewalkers, we look forward to holding another similar event next year.”
