Two Woking men were part of a local Special Olympics golf team from Pyrford Lakes Golf Club that saw success at the Special Olympics National Summer Games held in Glasgow last month.

Woking District Rotary Club made a donation of £300 to their travel costs which enabled them and their carers to participate.

Mikey Lines and Dominic Hsu attended the Rotary club meeting this month to proudly show their medals to members. Mikey won a gold medal for the Nine-Hole Golf Competition and Dominic came fifth in the Level 1 Skills Programme organised by The Golf Trust.

They were joined by Sally Lines and Judy Hsu and Rotarians president David Colbeck and Keith Millard.

In 2023 they had both competed in the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin where Mikey also won both silver and bronze medals for tenpin bowling, and Dominic won two silver medals in cycling.

It is hoped the World Games will be held in the UK in 2031 when both hope to compete.

The Rotary Club of Woking District was founded in 1976 to provide opportunities for local people who could not meet during the working day but wanted to get involved with the many communities in Woking.

The club has around 40 members and meets fortnightly on Wednesday evenings with a varied programme that includes social events.

It supports a number of events each year, which include fundraising and giving time to help the local community, and also supports some international projects. Since its inception the club has raised more than £850,000.

Approximately 75 per cent of funds raised are distributed to organisations and charities in the Woking area. The remaining 25 per cent is used to fund worthwhile charitable projects abroad, including End Polio Now.
