A Send resident has two good reasons to celebrate after a win in the Postcode Lottery was followed two days later by the birth of a new grandson.

Julie Hopwood, 65, won £125,000 and there was more joyful news just 48 hours later when her third grandson, Jack, arrived.

“This has been a week from heaven,” said Julie.

Julie shared £1m with five neighbours after GU23 7AJ landed the lottery’s weekly Millionaire Street prize on 1 August. Every ticket was worth £125,000, but one player tripled her prize by playing with three.

Remarkably, it is the second time in just six months that residents of Send have landed the £1m prize after postcode GU23 7AZ came up trumps in January.

Julie said she and husband Shaun, 75, will help the new generation including two-year-old Henry, five-month-old Arthur and latest addition, Jack.

“I’ve gone from having no grandchildren to having three in a short space of time,” she said. “I’d like to put a little bit aside for when the grandchildren are older and maybe help their parents out.”

Also among the winners collecting £125,000 was the grandson of a star footballer.

James Marshall, 49, told of his pride in his namesake grandfather who played for Glasgow Rangers, West Ham and Arsenal, and three times for Scotland, in the 1930s – then revealed he needs a pitch of his own.

James, wife Natalie and 13-year-old twins Orin and Scout have been landscaping their back garden with just the lawn to be laid, after the current hosepipe ban is lifted.

A Liverpool and Woking fan, James said: “My grandad was lucky enough to play for Rangers in the 1930s and was capped three times in home internationals against England.”

A few doors away, Leigh Roberts, 52, won £375,000 after trebling the prize by playing with three tickets.

Mother of two Leigh plans to help her family, including special needs teacher daughter Lauren, 24, and son Jack, 20, a second-year university student.

“It’s an opportunity now to help our kids, help my brothers and put some money in trust for my nieces who are both under 18, so they can buy their first car or something like that,” she said. “And do some work on the house.”

LinkAble Woking will receive £50,000 for the second time in six months after getting the same amount in January. The charity supports children and adults with learning disabilities.

Their fully accessible centre offers a range of activities that can be tailored to individual needs, with its dedicated staff also running regular day trips. It also provides support to parents and carers, giving them time to rest and reset.

CEO Sue Stockman said: "We are speechless! To receive a second £50,000 award this year, thanks to Postcode Lottery players, is mind-blowing.

"This funding is going to do so much good. It will directly support more than 300 children, young people and adults with a learning disability and autism to thrive, develop new skills and build lives they love.”
