Woking beat Leicester City under-21s 4-3 on penalties after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw in their National League Cup group stage match.

The Cards started brightly, with Jaiden Putman testing the Leicester defence with his pace early on. The full-back made a run beyond the backline and drilled the ball across the face of goal, only for Leicester’s Luqman Aideed to divert the ball into keeper Harry French’s arms.

Taylan Harris then went close for the Cards, stinging the palms of French, before Leicester’s Riley Carr drilled the ball into the arms of Woking keeper Vicente Reyes.

The Foxes created a decent opportunity on 12 minutes. Carr produced a driving run from midfield and slid the ball to David Anugo, whose effort was easily gathered by Reyes.

Woking were soon back on the front foot. Tunji Akinola headed wide from Harrison Sohna’s free-kick, before Sohna tested French from a free-kick.

Putman then nearly opened the scoring when he struck his effort narrowly wide after a good exchange of passes with Harris.

The visitors started the faster of the two teams in the second half. Joseph Cordon did well to win the ball back in midfield and drove with the ball before laying a pass off to Anugo, who struck his effort wide.

The Foxes took the lead in the 54th minute when Carr drove the ball across for Lorenz Hutchinson to turn home the opener.

Woking equalised four minutes later, when Harris nodded the ball past French at the back post.

The Cards went ahead on 65 minutes. Josh Kelly’s first effort was palmed away by French, but Kelly calmly slotted home the rebound to put Woking 2-1 up.

Woking largely controlled possession after taking the lead, but chances were limited, with Stephen Turner seeing his effort from long range blocked.

The Foxes got back on level terms in the 77th minute when Alpha Diallo turned the ball home from close range, despite the best efforts of Reyes.

The Cards had a good chance to regain the lead, but Akinola headed straight at French.

Leicester pushed for a late winner, and Reyes did well to keep out substitute Josh King’s effort from close range.

With the game level at 2-2 at full-time, the match went to a penalty shootout.

Sean Adarkwa scored the winning spot kick, as Woking won 4-3 on penalties to claim an additional point.
