A scheme to build 23 homes on a Surrey car park has been approved despite a councillor blasting the design of the houses as “hideous”. The plans will see the houses built on an existing car park by the railway line near Walton-on-Thames station.

It will include a mix of three and four-bedroom terraced houses. Councillors on Elmbridge Borough Council’s planning committee were asked to decide on the application after it received more than 15 public objections.

Councillor Harrison Allman-Varty said: “I’m pretty optimistic about development in the area but this scheme is hideous.”

Residents who wrote in objection to the proposals also raised worries about potential increases in traffic associated with the plans.

But other councillors argued that building on brownfield plots such as this could reduce the need for opening up more green belt sites for development.
