A new padel centre could soon be coming to a Surrey town under plans submitted for council consideration.

The proposals would see a new indoor sports facility built on the site of the demolished Northumberland House on the junction of Gresham Road and Drake Avenue in Staines.

While a proposed block of flats was previously granted planning permission for this site by Spelthorne Borough Council, these plans were never implemented.

Instead, planning permission is now being sought to bring a padel club to the empty brownfield site.

Planning documents read: “The proposed Staines Padel Club has been designed to create a contemporary, high-quality sporting facility that responds positively to its prominent corner location at the junction of Gresham Road and Drake Avenue.

“The design adopts a simple and functional architectural approach that reflects the operational requirements of a modern padel facility while ensuring the scale, appearance and materiality are appropriate to the surrounding urban context.”

The statement further notes that padel is one of the fastest growing community activities in the UK.

“The proposed facility will provide opportunities for casual play, coaching, organised events and community participation, helping to increase access to sporting activities within the local area,” the planning documents add.

Serving both nearby residents and a wider catchment area, the facility would provide opportunities for coaching and training as well as hosting competitions.

The site has been vacant since the old Northumberland House – formerly Cadline House – was knocked down, and no other approved schemes have been implemented.

It sits near to the centre of Staines and is within walking distance of the town’s railway station.

“The development benefits from excellent accessibility, with convenient pedestrian, public transport and vehicular connections, including its close proximity to Staines railway station and local bus services,” the documents add.

“Inclusive access principles have been embedded throughout the design, ensuring the facility is welcoming and accessible to all users.

“Importantly, the proposed use will provide a valuable community sporting asset, promoting health, wellbeing and social interaction through increased access to one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports.

“The redevelopment will transform an underutilised site into an active and vibrant destination, generating social, economic and environmental benefits for the local community.”

Spelthorne Borough Council officers will now review the application, with November 24 currently set as the deadline for a decision.
