Young people from Edge Ahead's Life on the Edge radio group are celebrating after being nominated in partnership with Woking radio in the Voices of the Community category at the National Community Radio Awards.

The radio session is run by long-time community radio presenter and producer and News & Mail columnist Jon Andrews.

It takes place every Thursday morning at Edge Ahead's St John's hub in Woking. The group welcomes young people who are interested in developing confidence, communication skills and media experience through the exciting world of community radio.

Life on the Edge is a monthly radio show created by young people attending Edge Ahead, an alternative provision supporting young people across Surrey. The show is broadcast on Radio Woking and Surrey Hills Community Radio.

Learners are involved in every stage of production, from planning topics and conducting interviews to recording and editing content. The project provides valuable real-world experience while helping young people build practical skills that can support future education, employment and community participation.

The group has taken part in a wide range of activities, including interviewing local residents, discussing current issues and meeting community leaders. One memorable highlight was meeting former Mayor of Woking Amanda Boote, where learners had the opportunity to perform and share their experiences.

The radio project, which began in the autumn of 2025, also helps build connections across the community. Learners contribute stories and interviews from a variety of local settings, including care homes, creating meaningful conversations between generations.

These experiences encourage communication, understanding and social confidence while providing engaging content for listeners.

The award nomination reflects Edge Ahead's commitment to creating opportunities that extend beyond traditional education. Since launching in 2021, the organisation has supported young people through programmes focused on employability, life skills, wellbeing, community engagement and personal development.

In addition to attending sessions, learners can work towards AQA Unit Awards, gain work experience, take part in volunteering opportunities, and develop pathways into paid employment opportunities within Edge Ahead. These experiences help young people build independence, develop workplace skills and gain meaningful experience to support their future goals.

Operating from hubs in St John's, Woking and Leatherhead, Edge Ahead provides a supportive environment where young people can explore their interests, increase their confidence and progress towards positive outcomes.

Learners involved in the radio project were delighted to hear about the award nomination.

Edward said: "I feel really proud that we've been nominated and it's exciting to know people are listening to what we do."

Ciara said: "Meeting the Mayor was my favourite part. I enjoyed getting involved and talking to new people."

Brandon added: "It's exciting to be nominated for an award. It's great to be part of something that people enjoy listening to."

The winners of the National Community Radio Awards will be announced in Birmingham later this month. Regardless of the outcome, the nomination is already a significant achievement for the young people involved and highlights the positive impact they are making within their local communities.
