Woking manager Craig Ross praised his side’s character after they won 3-2 at Scunthorpe United in the National League.

The Cards raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Aiden O’Brien (2) and John Marquis and looked on course for a comfortable afternoon.

However, Woking were reduced to ten men when Rico Browne was sent off, before James Norwood and Luke Brennan scored for the hosts to set up a grandstand finale.

Ross was delighted with how his side stood up to the challenges thrown at them to claim a third successive away win in the league.

“We keep facing adversity head on,” said Ross. “We meet the challenge and showed great character to dig in.

“Being down to ten men, having decisions going against us and injuries going against us, we showed unbelievable character to a man. I’m really proud of each and every one of them.

“It takes everyone to dig in and grind out those three points. I’m unbelievably pleased and proud of the group as a whole.

“Things haven't been easy for us recently, but with the performances they're putting they're giving us everything at the minute. I can't ask for anything more than that.

“It was a mad second half. We went 3-0 up and were in control of the game. The game would have been dead if it wasn't for a decision for a penalty and the sending off after.

“We spoke to Rico about it. We have to learn from those mistakes, because they can cost us.

“We had Jaiden Putman sent off a few weeks ago for something that was within his control and avoidable, and it was the same with Rico.

“The way the lads dug in and stuck together as a group, even playing ten minutes of added time at the end, was superb. It was backs to the wall and everyone, to a man, did their job superbly.

“Things are going against us, but our mindset is we find solutions. We don't complain about where we are. We have to get on with it. We have to stand up to the challenges we face – that's who we are as people and characters.

“We could all sit here and feel sorry for ourselves about the position we're in in terms of injuries, but we're in control of our response to these situations.

“We choose to respond positively and choose to respond in a way that finds solutions for the team. We keep getting the best out of each other.

“We gave the lads a few new messages this week about trying to give us more control at times in games. We still want to be a team that breaks quickly, counters quickly and punishes teams in those transitional moments, and we did that.”

Ross also praised Woking’s travelling support for their role in helping to see the Cards over the line.

“I could hear them constantly throughout the game,” said Ross.

“We needed them in those last ten minutes. They didn't stop singing in those last few moments, and as a player that gives you that one or two per cent extra that you need to keep going in those moments.”
