DEREK McCRUM was unveiled as the 42nd Mayor of Woking on Tuesday night.
And, as the main man said himself earlier this week, 42 is a very special number indeed.
Made famous by cult series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the number 42 is purportedly the answer to life, the universe... and everything.
Vacating the famous red robes was Councillor Tony Branagan who, aided by Mayoress wife Mary, has proudly carried the standard for the borough for the past year.
Lib Dem Cllr McCrum will be assisted by wife Rosemary in his duties. Taking over the deputy’s reins is Cllr Anne Murray.
The Conservative councillor is the wife of former Mayor Mike Smith, so will undoubtedly draw on her experience as his consort during her time as Mayor McCrum’s understudy.
Also honoured on the night were former Councillors Muzaffar Ali, Louise Morales, and Tina Liddington, all of whom have left the council in the recent election shake-up.
“I’ve led a very full and varied life,” said Mayor McCrum. “And although I will be taking things a little easier now that I am 71, I am still keen to make a difference during my mayoral year.”
Making a difference was one of the reasons why Mayor McCrum became involved in local politics 12 years ago.
“Youth work and planning are my biggest passions. As a councillor you have the ability to see ideas through on behalf of the community and shape provision in your local area.
“The Hoe Valley Scheme for instance has taken 200 local homes out of the flood plain and formed a wonderful park, loved by all.”
