PROPOSALS for a new Lakeview Community Centre were unveiled by Woking Borough Council at a meeting attended by 130 residents of the Lakeview estate.

The planned two-storey building would replace the present single-level centre near the general store in Tracious Close.

“The building would mean many more diverse activities could take place at the centre,” explained development manager of the Lakeview Community Action Group, Andrew Hargreaves (below).

The group was set up in 1998 by residents to address the multiple needs evident on the estate.

Andrew added: “The present building is somewhat dilapidated and no longer suitable for these purposes. ”

Lakeview residents were surveyed recently to gauge their opinions on the plans and gather ideas.

The existing site is currently home to a wealth of vital groups and clubs.

But Andrew believes that a revamp is essential to keeping the community heart beating.

“Most of the residents were positive towards the broad aim of building a new community centre, which would enable greater engagement,” said Andrew.

“This is badly needed, as the Lakeview estate is identified in Government statistics as being in one of the most disadvantaged wards in the borough.”

New Vision Homes assisted in the consultation and were represented at the meeting to record people’s suggestions and comments.

Andrew added: “Residents were able to see plans of Lakeview Community Centre and to meet the architect who was kept busy answering questions.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped with advertising the consultation, who distributed leaflets and posters and spoke to residents, as well as all those who came along to add their voice to the night’s discussions.

“The consultation has been a resounding success and revealed the residents’ strong desire for a new centre, to help keep the vibrant heart of the Lakeview community beating.”
