York Road Project, Woking’s homelessness charity, marked the arrival of spring with a general knowledge quiz that raised £3,000 for its essential local services in just one night of fun fundraising.
The quiz, held on 20 March, was the latest entry in a long tradition of fun quizzes. The charity has held these events in Woking regularly over the years, raising funding for its work with rough sleepers and people at risk of homelessness in the borough and across West Surrey.
This year’s event was hosted by Asahi UK, and held in the private bar in Asahi’s Woking headquarters.
York Road Project’s fundraising manager, Robert Eyers, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Asahi for hosting us this year and inviting us into their stunning venue. It made the 2026 Big Springtime Quiz one of our best quizzes ever!”
Seventeen teams including Quizzy Rascals, Four Brains and a Baby and Artificially Intelligent battled it out to be crowned Big Springtime Quiz winner 2026, testing not only their general knowledge but their ability to keep cool heads when faced by Asahi’s generous supply of free drinks.
The charity chose to host the event on this year’s spring equinox to mark the end of winter, which is typically the toughest time for people experiencing homelessness. The cold weather makes it tough for anyone rough sleeping, while Christmas can be a lonely time for individuals estranged from their family.
York Road Project says that the need for its services has been steadily increasing since the pandemic, and has now reached levels not seen for nearly ten years. More local people approached the charity for support in the last nine months of 2025 than did across the whole of the previous year.
Cherisse Dealtry, York Road Project’s CEO, emphasised the importance of community support for keeping the charity going.
“Our aim is to defeat homelessness,” she said. “Like any charity, we shouldn’t have to exist. But sadly the need for our support is increasing, and we can only keep up, offering a service that really makes a difference to as many people as possible, thanks to the funds we raise from our community.”
“The Big Springtime Quiz was a great example of how we can all come together,” Robert added. “We’re a charity, working on the frontline with people in need.
“Asahi UK are a brilliant business based in Woking, who wanted to use their venue to make a difference. And 100 members of Woking’s community bought tickets and came along to play their part… and play the quiz!”
The night was a huge success, raising a record £3,000, so York Road Project says they are talking with Asahi about hosting a follow-up later in the year.
If you fancy testing your knowledge against quiz winners, with the added bonus of plenty of drinks from Asahi’s large range of brands (which includes Fuller’s, Meantime, Cornish Orchards and Peroni), keep an eye on York Road Project’s social media, or sign up to its mailing list.
