WOKING’S Malayalee Association rang in the New Year with cheer and celebrations at their annual bash on Saturday.

Held at the Knaphill 1st Scouts’ venue in Waterers Park, the colourful event marked Christmas too, and included talented performances of singing and dancing, speeches, a nativity and an array of food and refreshments.

Special guests included Woking’s Mayor and Mayoress, Tony and Mary Branagan, and local MP Jonathan Lord, who all helped light the traditional ‘Nilavilakku’ lamp. The Malayalees are chiefly from the Indian state of Kerala, and lighting the lamp is an integral part of all their ceremonies.

Mr Lord said: “It was great to join the association in celebrating the New Year. The performances were wonderful and everybody was really enthusiastic.”
