A FORMER soldier shot by armed police in Knaphill has pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation fire arm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Severely disabled Richard Pell, 41, was shot in the hip by a single bullet outside his home in Oak Tree Road on July 25 after threatening to harm himself and residents with a replica gun and explosives.

He also pleaded guilty to communicating false information to officers during the incident when he appeared at Guildford Crown Court today (October 11) via video link from the hospital wing of High Down Prison in Sutton.

Defence solicitor David Castle, who privately convened with Mr Pell just moments before his guilty plea was heard, said his client was under a "great deal of emotional pressure" at the time of the shooting.

The case has been adjourned until Friday, November 23 when Mr Pell will be sentenced.

Judge Christopher Critchlow said credit would be given to Mr Pell for entering a guilty plea.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission are continuing to investigate the shooting.
