Woking striker John Marquis admitted there was no malice intended after his goal celebration at Carlisle United went viral on social media.
Marquis scored a hat-trick during Woking’s 5-2 win at Carlisle, and went viral for his celebration following the first of two penalties he put past Carlisle keeper Adam Desbois.
Prior to the spot kick being scored, Desbois had tried to put Marquis off by dancing across his line.
Marquis coolly sent Carlisle’s keeper the wrong way from the spot, before going to the goal-line to mimic Desbois’ antics. Marquis then went to shake Desbois’ hand, but left him hanging.
The former Millwall and Portsmouth striker admitted he meant no malice in the celebration after being on the receiving end of some choice words from Carlisle’s keeper.
“To be honest, I didn't expect it to blow up as much as it did,” said Marquis.
“It was just a bit of fun. The goalkeeper was messing around for the penalty, and to be honest he had some very choice and frankly disgusting words to say prior to that during the game towards family members of mine.
“I received it as a joke. I never take things personally on the football pitch, because at the end of the day everyone is there to do a job.
“It was just a bit of fun and it picked up viewings over certain platforms, but there was no malice in it and it was just one of those things.”
