A Mayford pub’s regulars could be watching summer sport on a brand-new big screen after the venue was shortlisted in a nationwide competition.
The Bird in Hand is among 11 pubs across the UK selected as finalists in Samsung’s Raise the Bar campaign, which aims to support community pubs by providing new TVs and audio equipment.
All shortlisted pubs will receive Samsung TVs and marketing support, while the winning venue will also receive a makeover worth up to £15,000.
The Bird in Hand, owned by local couple Mike and Imogen for more than a decade, was praised by organisers as a “well-established community hub” known for its award-winning food and welcoming atmosphere.
Former England footballer Joe Cole, who is supporting the campaign, said: “Across the UK, pubs are gearing up for the exciting summer of football ahead and it’s fantastic to see all the shortlisted venues and how they truly represent the heart of their communities.”
Samsung said pubs are under growing pressure from rising costs, with major sporting events providing an important boost in trade.
Research commissioned by the company found many football fans are frustrated by poor-quality screens and sound systems in pubs, while landlords worry outdated technology could drive customers elsewhere.
It was also found that 93 percent of South East pub landlords said football tournaments were important for boosting revenue, with venues seeing an average uplift of £8,786 during a World Cup.
Zeena Hill, senior director of marketing at Samsung UK, said: “Pubs have long been at the heart of UK communities, bringing people together to connect, celebrate and share major sporting moments.
“But with rising costs and increasing pressure on venues, it’s becoming harder to invest in the technology needed to meet fans’ expectations.”
Public voting is now open online, with football fans being encouraged to support their local pub.
