YOUNG footballers from Woking and across Surrey came together on Thursday last week to take part in a six-a-side tournament at Woking Leisure Centre in the presence of Woking Mayor Tony Branagan.

The friendly contest was held in support of an international campaign to tackle homophobia and any prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people in football.

Run as part of the FA’s Football v Homophobia campaign, it involved teams in the girls’ under-10 and U12, and boys’ U14 and U16 categories, each team intent on taking home the crown.

The event was organised by Surrey County FA, Woking Borough Council and Woking Town Football Club as the result of a grant from Pride Sports, the group behind the FvH campaign.

Councillor David Bittleston, Portfolio Holder for Cultural and Community Development, said: “It was a fantastic event that brought communities together in a fun atmosphere, but most importantly shouted the message that homophobia in sport is simply not acceptable.

“Sport is unifying, and this tournament was a fine example of that, with youngsters getting the chance to make new friends while testing out their football skills.”

Fans great and small were warmly encouraged to come along to the tournament to lend the players their support.
