WOKING & Sam Beare Hospices’ Dragon Boat Fun Day roars back on to Goldsworth Park Lake on Sunday (3 July) to breath yet more fire into the fundraising chase.

The third chapter of the annual amphibious fun day will once again see teams of paddlers race against each other to aid the charities in meeting their near £9 million annual running costs.

Last year almost 300 competitors, across 16 teams, took to the water. Having recently penned a new three-year partnership with the Woking and Weybridge-based charities, this year’s headline sponsor, Trident Honda, will be among those entering a team of its staff.

Managing Director of the Ottershaw firm, Richard Roberts, said: “Trident are delighted to continue to support the hospices, and when we asked the team if they would like to take part they jumped at the chance! On the day we will have at least 14 on board; there is a threat that I might have to be in the boat!”

Meanwhile, the hospices’ Events Fundraising Manager, Danielle Le Cuirot, added her delight at returning to the lake. “We have 14 boats ready to race and it should be a gripping competition,” she said. “It’ll be a great day out for all the family and fingers crossed the weather will be with us!”

The Dragon Boat Fun Day will again be held in memory of hospices fundraiser Kris Cook, who tragically suffered a cardiac arrest while taking part in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 cycle event in 2014.

Kris, who was aged just 36 when he passed away, grew up close to the lake where he pursued his love of water sports.

A bench in memory of him and fellow Woking Water Activity Centre patron Pete Oldfield was installed on the banks of the lake in November.
