Woking interim manager Craig Ross admitted his side have plenty of work to do after they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Gateshead in the National League.
Second-half goals from Alex Lankshear and Kyle Ferguson gave the Heed all three points in front of a crowd of 614 at Gateshead International Stadium.
“I’m very disappointed,” said Ross.
“I felt in the first half we were on top of the game. We created some half-chances and put some decent balls into the box.
“I told the lads at half-time we have to be more alive and on the move in terms of making runs and committing numbers to look a goalscoring threat.
“For the good bits we did in the first half, the second half was miles off of it.
“I’m bitterly disappointed. The performance in the second half was nowhere near good enough.
“The work we did this week was good – we felt prepared and for 45 minutes we carried it out well but we just lacked that cutting edge and that desire to go and score and make something happen in the final third.
“I told the lads at half-time I want to see that desire and willingness to go and throw their body in the way and bundle the ball over the goal-line.
“We had a couple of balls across the face of goal. The lads were in there but they weren’t on the move and weren’t anticipating where it's going to go.
“We work on that in training so they should know where it's going to go, but I didn't see that desire to go and put the ball in the net. Without that you give the opposition hope and let them stay in the game.
“Matt Ward had the one-on-one in the first half. If we take that and take one of the other chances that we should be there for we should be going in 2-0 up at half-time and it's a totally different feeling and a different game.
“The longer you let the opposition stay in the game, you know nine times out of ten they will come back and bite you for it.
“It's not the start anyone wanted but we have to learn from it very quickly.
“The manner of the goals we've conceded is not good enough. The lads are fully aware of that and accept that.
“First and foremost we have to be hard to beat, defend our goal and do all the basics really well.
“We didn't do that and we have to learn from it very quickly. We'll move on from it and look to put it right next week.”
Ross thanked Woking’s travelling support for making the 582-mile round trip to Gateshead and supporting his team.
“A massive thank you to the fans,” said Ross.
“I know they pay their hard-earned money and take the time to make the trip up here.
“We need to start repaying them with performances they can be proud of and get behind.
“We're not a million miles away but we definitely have work to do to give them something to cheer about.”
