An inspirational woman from Woking is swapping Surrey for the Sahara in a gruelling fundraising challenge in memory of her late son.
Ylang Fernandez Lowman will push herself to the limit over the coming week as she’s travelled to Morocco for the Marathon des Sables ultramarathon.
She will cross sand dunes, rock plains and scorching temperatures across 270kms, all while carrying her own food and gear, in six stages from April 5 to 11.
While Ylang is no stranger to running – she took part in the recent Surrey Half Marathon – she doesn’t consider herself an athlete.
But she’s determined to push through every blister, step and challenge as she’s taking part in the world-famous run for Rethink Support After Suicide in memory of her “beloved son and hero” Gem, who was just 31 when he took his life in November 2023.
She said: “I’ve never done anything like this before, but I will be powered not by adrenaline, but by the pure and unwavering love of a mother.

“My goal is not just to reach the finish line, but to carry Gem’s spirit with me every step of the way.”
Ylang said RSAS became a lifeline after Gem’s death as their care, compassion and guidance meant more than words can express.
She hopes her “Strides of Love: A Mother’s Journey Through the Sahara for Gem” mission will raise at least £2,600 to help the charity continue its vital work helping other families and friends devastated by suicide.
“It is the toughest footrace on earth – it will be demanding experience but I am committed to completing this support this important cause,” said Ylang, who will be camping enroute.
“Any donation, no matter how big or small, will make a meaningful difference.”
