THERE was plenty of zest to Woking’s annual Pancake Day Race on Tuesday.
Whisking up the borough’s finest flippers, organisers – namely Woking Shopping and Woking Shopmobility – got runners fired-up with a 1980s-themed event.
But despite some funky costumes creating what can only be described as a recipe for disaster, the day was a ‘frying’ success.
Multiple teams, including contingents from Woking Borough Council and Woking Bustler, battled it out in ‘pantastic’ fashion to be crowned pancake kings and queens. But it was the Woking Shopping Cleaning Services team who battered all who stood in their way, claiming top prize.
Coming in second were the Pink Ladies runners, known usually as Woking Chamber of Commerce.
The Bustler Drivers picked up a bronze medal while the best-dressed crew on the day were the good folk from the Woking Community Project, who certainly made for a colourful sight as they whizzed across Jubilee Square.
Prizes on the day included an £80 voucher to spend at Bill’s restaurant, tickets to see Spamalot, and vouchers for The Big Apple.
Working up an appetite, children – who ran in their own races – led their parents to some of Woking’s finest fooderies, including Bill’s, which offered some ‘egg-stra’ special blueberry pancakes, while Carluccio’s tempted teams with tasty crepes.
