“Procrastination is the thief of time. Collar him!”

Charles Dickens’ beloved David Copperfield bursts onto the stage in a vibrant new adaptation that charts the hero’s life from vulnerable childhood to celebrated writer. Thrust from his early home into a world of formidable aunts, cruel stepfathers, and unforgiving boarding schools, David’s path is shaped by hardship, humour, adventure, and the unforgettable characters that have made Dickens a literary icon. This is no ordinary Victorian tale—and David is no ordinary protagonist.

In this inventive and fast-paced production, three actors take on 19 of Dickens’ most richly drawn creations, from the indomitable Betsey Trotwood and sly Uriah Heep to the warm-hearted Peggotty and the irrepressible Mr Micawber. Brimming with wit, warmth, and Victorian charm, the show whirls with life—complete with kites, donkeys, and larger-than-life personalities. Ahead of its arrival in Guildford, the London premiere has already earned glowing critical praise, including ★★★★★ from Spy in the Stalls and ★★★★ from The Guardian, The Stage, and Time Out.

David Copperfield | February 6-28 2026 | Holy Trinity Church, High Street, Guildford

Guildford Shakespeare Company launches its landmark 2026 season with David Copperfield, celebrating twenty years since its first-ever production in Guildford’s Castle Gardens. Over two decades, GSC has evolved into one of the region’s busiest and most acclaimed theatre companies, with productions transferring to London and New York and featuring renowned performers such as Brian Blessed and Freddie Fox. Their award-winning Creative Learning Department now delivers 24,000 engagement opportunities annually—17,000 of them free—reflecting GSC’s commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and community enrichment.

Adapted and directed by Abigail Pickard Price, David Copperfield reunites the celebrated creative team behind GSC’s international hit Pride & Prejudice. Luke Barton returns to the company, joined by Eddy Payne as David and Louise Beresford, who—with Barton—portrays dozens of characters between them. Following its London run at Jermyn Street Theatre and subsequent tour to Windsor and Ipswich, the production arrives at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford, from February 6–28.

The anniversary celebrations continue in July with a sparkling open-air Shakespeare double-bill presented in collaboration with the Orange Tree Theatre: Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing, directed by OT Artistic Director Tom Littler and performed at the atmospheric Braboeuf Manor. Autumn brings a brand-new interactive murder mystery at the Hogs Back Brewery, alongside returning favourites such as Shakespeare Walks and the Young Company’s latest devised production.

To mark this milestone year, GSC is offering Annual Passes for £150, granting audiences access to all six main productions in the 2026 season—a perfect way to enjoy a full year of exceptional theatre.

Founders Sarah Gobran and Matt Pinches reflect proudly on two decades of creativity and community spirit—making the 20th anniversary season their most exciting yet.
