THE future of the Woking & Sam Beare Hospices is being put at risk from a lack of understanding about its value and that it is a charity reliant on fundraising activities and its 18 shops, the organisation has said.

The comment came after research into the views of local residents.

Half of 627 people questioned in the boroughs and areas covered by the hospice did not know that it is a charity and more than a third said they had no idea how it was funded.  

The hospice covers Woking, Surrey Heath, north Guildford, Spelthorne, Runnymede, and West Elmbridge but 31% of those surveyed thought that it cared only for people in Woking.

Jayne Cooper, CEO of Woking & Sam Beare Hospices, said: “There was overwhelming surprise about the volume of services that we provide and a lack of understanding that we care for the whole family and not just the person who is unwell. We also learnt that a large majority where shocked to hear that over 70% of our specialist care is delivered in patient own homes.”

Jayne was speaking in the run-up to the launch of the hospice’s 2019 appeal, which coincides with Dying Matters Week, which began on Monday and runs until Monday 20 May.

DRESS up for the 80s disco theme and “Let’s get physical” for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ Midnight Walk at 10pm on Friday 21 June.

But this eight-mile challenge for ladies is about more than just the way the charity works to care for its patients’ physical needs – it also enables the hospice’s staff and volunteers to ensure that many other important aspects of their wellbeing are met too.

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE – Being part of Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ Midnight Walk on June 21 helps to raise vital funds for the charity. This year the walk has an 80s disco theme.

Funds raised by walkers help the charity’s counsellors to listen to patients and also to their family and carers, helping to explore and alleviate their worries.

Event sponsorship can directly help the hospice’s social worker Caroline Hodgson to offer advice on often complicated issues that may be concerning patients and their families, such as benefits and finances, as well as arranging important experiences.

Caroline said: “We’ve organised two weddings, one vow renewal and arranged for a patient to have a virtual reality experience.  We will always try to go the extra mile, that’s what hospice care is about.

“If I can help a patient achieve their dreams, plan for the future, or be there for them at the end, then I’ve done my job.”

At a time when everything can feel confusing and overwhelming, the reassurance given by the CoSI team in people’s own homes overnight, matched with their nursing expertise, can reduce any stress caused by feeling responsible for a loved one’s medical needs, and enable families to be just that – family, not carers.

A LUCKY guess won more than chocolate for one local family – they ended up with a brand-new tumble dryer as well.

Nick and Evone Purvis, along with their children Callum and Amy, received the appliance thanks to a winning guess in the charity event organised by RSM Domestic Appliances in Knaphill.

All it took to enter was the donation of an Easter egg at their store in the High Street, allowing the family the chance to guess how many eggs were packed into the drum of the new Blomberg tumble-dryer.

“It’s a 10 kg machine, so it has the biggest drum you could get,” said Kirsty Haydon of RSM. “We managed to fit 255 eggs inside. Their guess was 256, just one out, which was the closest of all the entries by a long shot.”

The tumble-dryer was delivered and installed free of charge. The competition was the family firm’s way of boosting donations to Eagle Radio’s Egg Appeal, which collected chocolate eggs to share around more than 50 local charities and organisations, including Woking and Sam Beare Hospices, yourSanctuary and Woking Community Health Recovery Service.

Donate an Easter egg at their store in the High Street, and that’s your chocolate entry to guess how many eggs are packed into the drum of the gleaming Blomberg appliance.

“Someone is going to win it and whoever that is are going to be over the moon. It’s just been named best tumble-dryer by Which,” said RSM managing director Steve Haydon.

“There’s no catch, no trick – just donate an egg and hopefully win a tumble-dryer. It costs £369.99, but will be free for the price of an Easter egg.”

The competition was hit upon by the firm as a way to boost donations to Eagle Radio’s Egg Appeal, which helps give local, less fortunate children a happier Easter, collecting chocolate eggs to share around to more than 50 local charities and organisations, including Woking and Sam Beare Hospices, Your Sanctuary and Woking Community Mental Health Recovery Service.

If no one guesses the exact number, then nearest the total will win. If several people have the same winning guess, their names will go into a hat and the winner then chosen with a blind draw.

The competition will run until Friday 26 April. All eggs donated at RSM by 14 April will be dropped off to the Eagle Radio appeal. Any entries after that will be taken to St Peter’s Hospital for distribution there.

THE annual Midnight Walk to raise funds for the Woking & Sam Beare Hospices will have a 1980s theme this year.

The charity’s biggest annual fundraising event will include Susie Roberts and her Deans K-As Team who will be walking in memory of her husband Dean who was cared for by the hospice in 2016 before he died aged 54. He was the former chairman of Knaphill Athletic Football Club.

Susie said: “Deans K-As have taken part in the Midnight Walk in Deans memory every year since and we will continue to do so. Seeing all those people standing together makes me realise I’m not on my own. It’s such a fantastic event to be a part of.”

Jayne Cooper, the hospices CEO, said: “Last year we cared for over 2,000 patients, their carers and families across North West Surrey and the Midnight Walk raises the essential funds we need to continue this.”

The eight-mile Midnight Walk route starts and finishes at Woking Leisure Centre starting at 10pm on 21 June, and it is open to girls and woman aged 11 and over.

Registration is now open and if you sign up before 30 April you will enjoy the early bird entry of £15 per entrant. Walkers are encouraging all our walkers to dress in their best 1980’s gear and there will be prizes for the best dressed team and individuals. Walkers can also buy Midnight Walk T-shirts. The event is being sponsored by Trident Honda for the fourth year running and is supported by Freedom Leisure Centre.

CHARITIES and community groups have received more than £10,000 from the proceeds of the 2018 Ripley bonfire and fireworks celebrations.

Cheque presentations by the Ripley Bonfire Association took place at the village cricket club on Sunday 3 February.

Bonfire association chairman Vernon Wood said: “I would like to thank the bonfire builders, who work selflessly every weekend in October, everyone who tidies up our green after the event, and all supporters, volunteers and committee members who have made the event such a success.”

The chairman of Ripley Parish Council, Jennie Cliff, congratulated the bonfire committee for supporting local organisations.

“The over-60s are grateful for the wealth of opportunity given to them, and it’s lovely to see organisations such as Surrey Search & Rescue benefit from our event,” she said.

Liz Cussans, the Woking & Sam Beare Hospices HR director, added: “I would like to thank the bonfire committee and Ripley residents for their much-appreciated support.”
