PIECES from talented artists at Woking College returned to The Lightbox yesterday (Thursday).

It marks the eighth time an exhibition made up entirely of student-devised works has been staged at the gallery.

Until Sunday, July 12, visitors will be able to explore the showcase, which features work from students of fine art, textiles, photography, applied art and DT courses.

Head of Art, Ali Mirmak,  said: “We hope you can join us to celebrate the hard work of our students. Last year 1,300 visitors came to the show and we hope to build on this success, when renowned collector Chris Ingram bought several students’ work.

“We were incredibly proud of Josie, Amber and Claudia for their achievements last year. It is a real honour for us that they have become part of such a prestigious collection; one that contains so many pieces by well-known British artists.

“We believe that this year we are seeing a fresh group of ambitious and, importantly, local talents begin to emerge.”

Chris’ important collection, The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art, is housed at The Lightbox and is constantly on demand for loans to other museums and galleries for exhibitions across the country. One of the pieces he bought last year will be on display this time around too.

Mr Ingram said: “Having visited many degree shows in London, I was struck by the talent evident among the young students at Woking.

“These three works, in particular, leapt out at me; the artists show a level of accomplishment that belies their young years. I am delighted that these artists are now represented in The Ingram Collection, and look forward to seeing their careers flourish.”

The exhibition is always popular and Learning Manager at The Lightbox, Abi Hall, said this year should be no different. She added: “We always look forward to showing the Woking College Summer Art Show.

“Both students and tutors work extremely hard to display the artwork, and every year the quality of talent seems to get better and better.”
