St Dunstan’s hosts an international affair

A FESTIVAL Mass fit for St Dunstan himself left revellers at the Woking church with full stomachs and high spirits.

Each weekend, there are five celebrations of the Eucharist at St Dunstan’s, with some 1,600 parishioners attending. And every year, on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St Dunstan, the church holds a single gathering for the whole parish to celebrate together.

“Parishioners take pride in dressing in their national costume, explained Chairman of the Parish Team, John Sexton, who said that the background and cultural heritage of each member was recognised during the colourful service.

“Readings and prayers are said in many different languages and different cultural traditions are celebrated at Festival Mass.

“This is followed by a social gathering and shared meal provided by parishioners.

“So we find ourselves enjoying flavours from Africa, India, Poland, Russia, China, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Ireland and many, many more countries.”

A collection taken up in the parish just prior to the Festival Mass raised a generous £3,500 for the Nepalese earthquake disaster appeal.
