Quentin Blake is drawing in crowds

HIS drawings are synonymous with The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and all of Roald Dahl’s other classic tales.

It’s almost impossible to think of these well-loved tales without recalling the art of Quentin Blake. Now Woking’s The Lightbox is to host a landmark exhibition of the artist’s work when the gallery and museum hosts Quentin Blake: Inside Stories.

More than 140 works will be included and the show will bring together first roughs and storyboards – many never shown before.

They will then be shown alongside the finished artwork to demonstrate how Blake’s ideas evolved, often in close collaboration with authors like Dahl.

The exhibition will show how Blake brings to bear a wide range of different techniques and media including inks, watercolours and pastels applied with a variety of touch, in response to the particular mood of a book and the nature of its characters, to create his distinctive and unforgettable illustrations.

Lightbox Director Marilyn Scott says: “One of my favourite exhibitions at The Lightbox was Children’s Books, it had
something for everyone, so I’m particularly delighted that to be hosting Quentin Blake: Inside Stories, which we will be showing in collaboration with House of Illustration. This exhibition has been curated by Quentin himself and will include all your favourite characters.”

Co-curated by Claudia Zeff, this insightful exhibition will offer a unique look into the origins of some of Blake’s most popular
creations – from Dahl’s The Twits and The Boy in The Dress by David Walliams, and illustrations to books by John Yeoman,
Russell Hoban and Michael Rosen.

House of Illustration Director Colin McKenzie adds: “Quentin Blake is an illustrator of world renown whose work is instantly recognisable to millions. This exhibition will offer audiences of all ages a unique insight into both his work and working method.”

Quentin Blake: Inside Stories will be at The Lightbox in Woking from Saturday, October 10 until Sunday, January 17.
