A WOKING man will reach for the sky when he takes on Mount Everest for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Nigel Briant, from Woking, will climb the world’s highest mountain to help raise vital funds for the London-based children’s charity. Nigel, who will set off on April 5, will follow in the footsteps of many intrepid explorers as he joins a five-person expedition team for two months to climb the formidable 29,000ft peak to raise £35,000.
Experienced climber Nigel, who has also taken on Mount McKinley and Kilimanjaro, will take a two-month sabbatical from his post as IT Associate Director at the Royal Bank of Canada to complete the awe-inspiring
challenge as part of RBC’s ongoing support for the charity, which was started in 2010.
The bank, for which Nigel has worked for more than 12 years, is the title sponsor for Race for the Kids – a 5km fun run which for the past four years has helped raise vital funds.
Nigel, who was inspired by his daughter’s treatment, explains: “When my daughter was just 18-months-old she underwent open-heart surgery at our local hospital.
“While this was without doubt the most intense and agonising experience of my life, the care she received was amazing, and so I have decided to do something to pay my respects to the truly courageous paediatric doctors, nurses and support teams who care for sick children every day – which is to climb to the summit of Mount Everest.”
Account Manager for Corporate Partnerships at the charity, Sarah Norris, added: “We’re so very grateful to Nigel and RBC for their continued support and we wish him every success in completing this incredible challenge.”
Nigel added: “At 5,895m and 6,168m respectively, Kilimanjaro and Mount McKinley are mere mole-hills compared to the 8,848m vertical challenge I am facing in attempting to summit Mount Everest, but every step will be helping to make a difference for the thousands of children treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital every year, and for their families.”
All the money raised by Nigel will go directly to the charity – no cash will be used to offset the expedition’s costs.
