LOCAL Lib Dems have spoken out strongly against plans by Woking Borough Council to close the Kestrel Way Recycling Centre in Goldsworth Park.
Local campaigner and Lib Dem candidate in the upcoming Goldsworth East by-election, James Sanderson, said: “The Kestrel Way Recycling Centre is a well-used facility, it would be ridiculous to close it.
“If the recycling centre closes, I am worried that fly-tipping would increase around Goldsworth Park and Horsell. The council would be making a false economy to close it.”
Leader of the Lib Dems on Woking Borough Council, Will Forster, insists a consultation should have been held prior to any decision.
He said: “Typically of the Conservatives running Woking Borough Council, there has been no public interaction on these plans whatsoever.
“The proposal to close Kestrel Way Recycling Centre is based on the proposition that much of the recycled waste is being handled by kerbside services.
“However, I am most concerned that the council is proposing to cut residents off from a service that still sees regular use.”
Mr Sanderson added: “I am appalled the council wants to build yet more industrial units in Goldsworth Park, this time the units would be right in the face of Sythwood homes – almost opposite Sythwood Primary School and the Salvation Army Church. I think these plans are completely inappropriate for a residential area.”
