PRIMARY pupils from across Woking braved the crisp cold weather last week to take part in a number of relay-race competitions in Goldsworth Park.
Among the many competitors were juniors from St John’s St Hugh of Lincoln, Goldsworth Park Primary pupils, Pirbright Village School youngsters, Horsell CofE Juniors, and a team from West Byfleet Junior School.
Around 700 enthusiastic youngsters were decked out in their respective colours – some along with extras to fight of the cold – and did their schools proud. Topping the wins table for the afternoon were the blues of Pirbright Village School.
The competition was run by Woking Area Sports Primary Schools, a confederation of schools who work together to stage competitions across a huge range of sports across the year.
The series of races formed part of a three-week-long festival that was marshalled by volunteers. A group of young leaders from Woking High School also gave up their time to help lead the runners round the course and record finishing places.
John Dunsford of Horsell CofE Junior School explained: “It is a truly open event that welcomes all competitors who want to run.
“It has been taking place in the borough for more than 20 years with the help of teachers and volunteers who give up their time to organise what continues to be one of the largest participation events in the Woking primary schools calendar.”
