IT WAS payback time after a medical emergency meant Eileen Smith needed to call on the services of SWAN – South West Woking Assisting Neighbours.
For many years Eileen has been giving her time and energy as a duty officer, driver and committee member for the voluntary organisation.
“I needed drivers to take me to various appointments, having had major surgery followed by 10 weeks in hospital,” explained Eileen. “My world of independence had come crashing down around me – and SWAN came to my rescue.
“It is one of Woking’s Good Neighbours schemes covering the Mount Hermon and Barnsbury and areas. A SWAN volunteer collects you from home, takes you where you need to be and brings you back again – all for a nominal payment.”
SWAN volunteers can also help people fill in forms, do small odd jobs, and collect prescriptions and shopping. Mount Hermon and Barnsbury residents can request SWAN’s services by calling 07913 282346 between 10am and midday on any weekday.
Eileen added: “We are always looking for volunteers to meet increasing demand for our services: as drivers, duty officers to man the phone for two hours on a weekday, and committee members.
“Volunteers can claim expenses. The committee meet for an hour every six weeks and ensure that the scheme is being managed efficiently and professionally.”
