BLUE is definitely the colour in the newly formed Heathlands ward as sitting Conservative trio Kevin Davis, Ayesha Azad and Council Leader John Kingsbury were re-elected.
Cllr Davis, who sealed four more years at the borough’s top table with 1,519 votes, says he is now waiting to see how the practicalities of the new ward make-up – having been the sole Brookwood representative for years – will unfold.
He told the News & Mail: “I am extremely proud to have been the final ever Brookwood councillor. Heathlands is called Heathlands for a reason; and our open space has plenty of challenges coming up.
“I will continue to do as I have done and carry on representing the views of Woking residents when it comes to their heathland. The ward is the biggest in the borough, and it will be interesting to see how the dynamic of managing it pans out.”
Cllr Azad, who admits she has a busy workload ahead of her – driven largely by Mayford’s dispute over development on Egley Road – says she is very pleased to have been given the backing of residents.
She said: “My thanks goes out to residents; there are lots of issues in Mayford alone and I am looking forward to working hard to address them.
“It will be good to work with Kevin and John having come from a single Conservative member in Mayford. I see it being much easier to work with people who are on the same side politically – having a group mentality will be a welcome change.”
Meanwhile, Council Leader John Kingsbury held on to his seat to land two more years on the local authority.
“I will enjoy the week and look forward to getting back to business on Monday when the Conservatives will hold their AGM.”
