BOWLS: A QUARTET of Knaphill bowlers claimed top spot in a prestigious Top Four competition last weekend.
Having breezed through the qualifying rounds in August, the fantastic four were invited to compete in the Surrey County semi-final at Guildford Bowls Club on September 7.
Opponents Epsom suffered on the first two ends by dropping 10 shots, but soon fought back to within two shots going into the 20th end.
Knaphill clinched the game in dramatic fashion by scoring a single and a double to conclude on 25-20.
The afternoon’s final would pit them against Rosehill, who defeated Byfleet earlier on in the day. The final was played in glorious sunshine on a green that bowled extremely well.
Mickey Gosden, who played lead for Knaphill, had a marvelous duel with his Rosehill counterpart, while Norman Crawley at two backed up the excellent start.
By the end six Rosehill were 5-3 up but won only three of the next 11 ends, conceding 22 shots.
Mark Jones in particular played excellently, running and drawing shots to bring well placed bowls from Terry Dockley into play. The match ended 27-12 in Knaphill’s favour.
