WOKING Borough Council’s town centre car park charges went up again on Wednesday last week.
According to the Leader of the local Liberal Democrats, Councillor Will Forster, in April 2013 the council increased the fees by as much as 20 per cent and, from last week, have increased charges again.
Cllr Forster said: “Local Lib Dems completely oppose the Conservatives’ moves to hike parking charges – the second increase in 18 months. I think this further rise is completely unacceptable.
“How can the council justify an inflation-busting 25 per cent increase in just 18 months to park a car?
“On April 1 last year, it cost £8 for a day’s parking in Woking’s town centre. By the end of that month it cost £9 a day and now that cost has risen to £10.”
The one-hour charge will be £1.30, an 18 per cent increase in 18 months. Residents parking for five or six hours will have to pay £6.10 – an increase of 22 per cent.
