Cards stun the not so jolly Green giants

Woking 2
Forest Green Rovers 1

KINGFIELD was rocking on Tuesday night as Woking became the first team to fell unbeaten league leaders Forest Green Rovers in a barnstorming 2-1 victory.

This eagerly anticipated top of the table clash under the floodlights had it all: end-to-end attacking football played at breakneck speed, superb goals and even a late red card.

Just as Cards gaffer Garry Hill did in the last campaign, Rovers boss Ady Pennock had masterminded a nine-game undefeated start to the new season, which was always guaranteed to crank up the volume down the Kingfield Road.

And the decibel levels were soaring at the end of a breathless first half when playmaker John Goddard – notching his seventh goal in a blistering start to the season – gave the Cards a deserved lead in sensational style two minutes before the interval.

After a superb one-touch passing move with forward Dan Holman, Cards’ top scorer looped home a header on the rebound after his initial shot had been parried by keeper Jonny Maxted.

An almost basketball-esque contest continued after the break, with Cards’ man of the match, Bruno Andrade, providing more fireworks down the flanks. It was Jimmy Keohane who grabbed the all-important next goal 20 minutes from time, crashing the ball home after another break from Andrade.

Green’s Kurtis Guthrie squirmed the ball under Jake Cole to pull a goal back but the Cards held out for a memorable win after Marcus Kelly’s late dismissal.

WOKING: Cole, Caprice, Arthur (Daniel, 29mins), Thomas, Keohane, Murtagh,  Saah, Goddard, Holman, Cardwell (Sole, 66mins), Andrade (Poku, 88mins).
