MUSICAL tribute acts are two a penny these days and now, it seems, comedy is taking the same route.
They’ve been before and no doubt they’ll be back soon – Peter Gill and Andrew Meller return to the Mill Studio at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre on Thursday (May 14) with Another Evening with the Humour of Bob Newhart and Tom Lehrer.
The comedy duo present their dedication to the satirical humour of American comic legends Bob Newhart and Tom Lehrer.
In the late 1950s rock ’n’ roll was changing popular music forever.
At the same time satirist Tom Lehrer and comedian Bob Newhart were causing their own kind of mayhem on both sides of the Atlantic – Bob Newhart’s first album The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart actually outsold Elvis Presley to reach the top of the charts in 1960.
Through wickedly funny satire, Tom Lehrer sang of Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, doing The Masochism Tango and Getting IT (VD) From Agnes.
Bob Newhart was gentler with his comedy routines, delivering hilarious monologues as a Driving Instructor, Captain of The USS Codfish and the importer for Sir Walter Raleigh (Bringing Tobacco to Civilisation) – performances that made him one of the most popular comedians of all time.
Peter and Andrew’s current show is a follow-up to their hugely successful An Evening with the Humour of Bob Newhart and Tom Lehrer, this time with more songs and sketches from the catalogue of two of America’s greatest satirists of the 50s and 60s.
Expect such gems as Bob Newhart’s The Nudist Camp Expose, The Daddy of All Hangovers and Superman and the Dry Cleaners; and Tom Lehrer’s Pollution, Smut and Oedipus Rex.
