FOUR Woking stores have failed in a test purchase operation by Surrey Police – with staff fined after selling alcohol to minors.
Budgens, Costcutters and Gorkha Groceries on Chertsey Road, and Every Days in Maybury Hill did not ask the teenage shoppers for identification at any time.
Woking’s Youth Intervention Officer PC Craig Matthews said: “Once again it is extremely disappointing that such a large proportion of the premises tested have failed to carry out their res-ponsibilities with regard to selling alcohol to underage teens.
“This is the second such operation we have run in a short space of time and it’s shocking that during the course of those two operations seven of the nine premises tested have failed and have made a sale to under age customers.
“It’s proven that alcohol is a significant contributory factor to youth related disorder and antisocial behaviour, and any licenced premises must take responsibilities seriously no matter how busy they are and however old their customers may look.
“Surrey Police will continue to use tactics such as test purchasing to test our retailers with regard to their licensing responsibilities and will not hesitate to review their licences if that is the appropriate action to take.”
