Walter Ernest Munn, known as Ernie, had a long career in the Royal Navy, beginning when he was just 14, having lied about his age to sign up. He joined HMS Ganges, near Harwich, in 1929, rising in rank to retire eventually as Chief Petty Officer. Ernie’s first active service was protecting the ports of Spain in the Spanish Civil War. He was on numerous ships throughout his 22 years in the Navy including a period of time as a sub-mariner.
