Battle Of Minds In Derby Clash

PREVIEW: A MONTH after their last encounter, Knaphill and Westfield will battle it out again this Saturday (22 October) at Redding Way, writes Lewis Winter.

Since then, both sides have struggled for consistency – most notably Westfield who saw their unbeaten 10-match league run come to an abrupt end against lowly Colliers Wood United two weeks ago.

Despite Westfield winning the last duel at Woking Park, Knaphill boss Keith Hills (pictured left) isn’t looking for revenge.

“I wouldn’t call it revenge – that’s a strong word,” he said.

“They’ve got a game plan; we’ve got a game plan; it’s a game of chess in a local derby.

“I thought we played very well against them last time, but we had Richard Shelley [goalkeeper] sent off and they penalised us for that.”

When asked for his views on Saturday’s opponents, and particularly Yellows’ boss Tony Reid, Hills was complimentary.

He said: “He’s a good manager and he’s got a good squad. Every team takes a dip in form at some point, which is probably what Westfield are going through now. It’s a good time to play them. In truth, local derbies are like cup finals. You never quite know what’s going to happen on the day.”

Reid (pictured right) admits he underestimated his opponents in their previous clash and won’t be making the same mistake twice.002_tony_reid_westfieldfc_manager_030916_by_andyfitzsimons

“Knaphill are a very good team, they’re physical and want to play football,” he said. “I took them for granted last time, which I won’t be doing this time around. I know they’re not having the best of runs, but in a derby match it can go either way.”

When asked if The Yellows can take confidence this weekend from their recent 2-1 win over Knaphill, Reid said: “We’ve got to be winning games to have confidence, and we’ve fallen short of the mark recently, so the players’ confidence could be better. We need to be on it to win it.”

Get down to Redding Way this Saturday (3pm) to see what will no doubt be a feisty exchange between two Combined Counties League promotional hopefuls.
